Twitter has reached a landmark of 500 million accounts registered on the service, according to an article published by PC Advisor.
Twopcharts – a stat site for the micro-blogging service – reported that as of 11am yesterday morning (February 23) Twitter has nearly 5,000,700,000 registered users.
Originally launched in July 2006, the micro-blogging site has gone from strength to strength. Just last year it was estimated that the site had just 300 million active users; it is now been mooted that the service could hit 600 million users in just three and a half months from now.
Although there is some controversy surrounding the figure – relating to the fact that many accounts lie dormant or have never tweeted – it is fair to assume that Twitter has a massive user base – with an estimated 140 million tweets posted everyday.
Twitter are yet to comment on the story.

Promoted Trends and Promoted Tweets yield engagement rates between 3% and 10% on average, and sometimes much higher than that. For instance, Volkswagen got 52% engagement on an April 18 Promoted Tweet for its 2012 New Beetle launch.
In this case, engagement is defined by click-throughs (which usually accounts for 80% of the total), retweets and “favorited” tweets. The buying process for Promoted Trends and Promoted Tweets and all of Twitter’s ad products follow a model similar to Google’s – marketers buy them in an auction at a cost-per-engagement rate, and then pay based on engagement.
Obviously, if you’re running a Promoted Trend or Promoted Tweet, it helps if you have some kind of news, product launch, or associated event. For instance, For instance, Coca-Cola earned high engagement during the 2010 World Cup — whenever a goal was scored, Coke would unleash a celebratory tweet.

Heres some new data from the great Dan Zarrella. If you havent heard of him then maybe its time for some introductions, hes considered the social media scientist due to his research into social media and whats actually going on. He also puts it over in a way that everyone can understand – not just the “tech’s!”
A question you may have when your either starting, refining or continuing with your Twitter marketing is wether or not Twitter is bets suited for conversation or broadcasting. Dan Zarrella has looked into some data regarding which is more effective for marketing on Twitter.
Heres what he posted about it:
“One of the social media questions I’m most interested in is about whether Twitter is best suited for conversation or broadcasting. To many people’s surprise, I generally find myself on the broadcast side, and most of the data I’ve analyzedseems to back me up.
Just yesterday, I started a little informal Twitter poll and found that respondents were pretty evenly split between broadcasting and conversation.
This time, I looked at more than 100k randomly chosen active Twitter accounts and their Tweets. I analyzed the percentage of their Tweets than contain a link as well as the percentage that began with an @. I also measured the percentage of their last 100 Tweets that were ReTweeted.
I found that accounts that had high link-percentages between 60% and 80% had the most ReTweets and accounts with low reply-percentages between 0% and 10% had the most ReTweets.”
If you’re interested in ReTweets, broadcasting lots of interesting content works much better than “engaging in the conversation.”
